My MF1700 is having a weird brake issue. the brakes are locking up with just light pedal pressure. any thoughts on what might be causing this or other suggestions?
thanks for any help!

If the brakes are locking up with light pedal pressure, it's usually one of three things, worn brake pads causing the piston to stick, bad rubber caps leading to fluid leaks and letting in moisture or air, or uneven brake fluid pressure caused by either of those issues, throwing the system out of balance. Good idea to check all three.

Brakes locking up with just light pressure could cause accidents, I'd be worried about a serious mechanical fault, so get it inspected right away to avoid danger.

yep, I agree. With 'bad rubber caps leading to fluid leaks,' are you referring to the caliper piston seals or master cylinder seals? Sometimes a simple bleed can temporarily help with uneven pressure, but definitely agree, it usually points to a bigger underlying problem

Sounds like the brake linkage or return springs might be binding or sticking on the 1700s, also worth checking the fluid level in the master cylinder if it's a hydraulic setup, too full or contaminated fluid can mess with pressure

A colleague had a similar issue recently and it turned out to be a combination of a sticky caliper piston and some old, contaminated brake fluid.
He ended up rebuilding the calipers and doing a full fluid flush and bleed, and that solved it!
